You determine the credit limit by the amount of your security deposit.

When you close your account and all balances have been paid, we return your deposit.

Does running a debit card as credit rather than debit help your credit score?

No, but there are advantages to running a debit card as a credit card. Most importantly, a "credit" transaction is more protected than a "debit" transaction, both in terms of protections against defective merchandise and because you do not use your PIN in a "credit" transaction. The "debit" transaction requires you to enter your PIN, which means someone could see your PIN number as you enter it or record it if the slider you use for the transaction is a bogus "card reader" used by thieves who are serving your food, checking you out at a convenience store, etc. In addition, you typically earn no "Thank You points" or other rewards from your bank for a "debit" transaction, but you do earn them for "credit" transactions. One last point: "debit" transactions immediately hit the account to which they are linked, just as if you had taken that amount out of an ATM. This might help you if tomorrow is pay-day, and you have automatic deposit into your checking account and you need gas from a gas pump. In other words, you might be able to purchase the gas with tomorrow's deposit, because the "hit" to your account usually won't show up for a day or two, or may show as "$1" for a day or so, before debiting the entire amount of the transaction. This happens at QT gas stations, in particular. Not that I recommend this, but just in case you're in a pinch, I thought I'd mention it. Hope this all helps!

Does PSB report to the bureaus as a secured card or as a regular Visa?

We report as a regular Visa card. There are no markings on the card that show that this is a secured account. This card acts and looks like any other credit card in the market.

Thank you for considering Public Savings Bank

Adding a new credit card often requires a new hard credit inquiry which can lower your score. In the case of PSB, you should simulate increasing your credit limit not adding a new card since PSB does not perform a hard inquiry as part of the application. Let us know what happens. Good Luck.

If a customer has a PS Visa and no balance and a good history, and later files bankruptcy, will the account be closed if the PS Visa is not included in bankruptcy?

The account will not be closed as long as you make payments or we are instructed to do so by a bankruptcy judge.

The short answer is no. This is not a prepaid card that requires constant reloads. You set up your security deposit once, then use it like a regular credit card.

Hope this helps!

This is a complete ripoff. $79 for a secured card that you must secure with your own money??

No one needs a credit card when you have debit cards you can use as a credit card

concentrate on improving credit and get a real unsecured card

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but keep it mind without a credit card it is difficult to improve your credit. This card serves a segment of the population who don't have many good options.

Debit cards do not establish credit tradelines. You need credit to establish tradelines and often people in this category cannot get traditional, or reasonable credit terms.

For $79 and no annual fee, our customers get 0% APR for 6 months and a reasonable Prime + 7.99% interest rate.

If you cannot get a traditional card, than a secured is the next best thing. Debit cards do not build credit, which may do you good now but. Try buying a home or even a car down the road. I started with a secured card at age 18 and it helped alot. The only downside I had was that it also had a $69 annual fee. But hey live and learn. thank you

rollinhigh, publicsavbk and ckmoderator have already answered why secured cards can be a good option, particularly over debit cards.

besides, being the victim of erroneous charges myself it's MUCH better to deal with erroneous charges on a credit card than it is on a debit card. much MUCH better.

CK Moderator

That is a good point about liabilities of credit card cards versus debit/pre-paid cards.
