How we picked these credit cards
The cards on our list offer a mix of strong rewards and instant-use potential. While many credit cards are now considered instant access credit cards, they aren’t all advertised as such. For our list, we chose cards that have clear evidence that eligible cardholders can use them immediately after approval, either by adding them to mobile wallets or by using virtual credit card numbers.
We also made sure this list had instant access cards for people with a variety of different credit and financial situations.
How do instant access credit cards work?
Instant access credit cards provide new cardholders with virtual credit card numbers or mobile wallet integrations as soon as their applications are approved. You may see a prompt to get your virtual card number on your approval screen, or you may find it in your online account or your issuer’s mobile app.
To make a purchase with an instant access credit card that provides a virtual card number, simply use that virtual number to check out with an online retailer of your choice. If your card requires you to add it to a mobile wallet first, then you’ll have to set that up online or through your issuer’s app. Once that’s complete, you can use your card anywhere mobile wallets are accepted.
But not everyone who applies for an instant access credit card will be able to use their card instantly.
Some issuers take additional steps to verify your identity and weigh the security risks of allowing a person instant access to the account’s credit line. If your account isn’t approved for instant use, consider calling your issuer and speaking with a representative about the issue.
FAQ: Editors’ answers
Are all credit cards instant access credit cards?
No, not every credit card is an instant access credit card. To be able to use a credit card instantly after approval, the credit card issuer needs to provide mobile wallet access or a virtual credit card number.
Which credit cards can you get and use instantly?
Some of the top choices for instant access credit cards are the Chase Freedom Unlimited®, Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Apple Card and Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express. To check whether your card is an instant access credit card, log into your online account or app and look for the card details. You also may be prompted on your approval screen to get a virtual credit card number immediately after you’re approved.
Which issuers offer instant access credit cards?
Instant access cards are available from several notable issuers, including Chase, Capital One and American Express. You can also find instant access cards from issuers like Citi and Bank of America.
What’s the difference between instant access credit cards and instant-approval credit cards?
Instant access credit cards provide a virtual card number or mobile wallet integration immediately after your application is approved. Instant-approval credit cards let you know whether your application is approved or denied immediately. While many credit card issuers approve or deny applications instantly, they still generally reserve the right to take more time deciding. Getting approved instantly doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be able to use the card instantly — you may still have to wait.
