How we picked the best gas credit cards
We identified the best gas credit cards by singling out the highest available rewards rates offered every time you visit the pump. Once we settled on a core list of cards, we considered what kinds of people would benefit most from each card to settle on our unique categories. In some cases, we chose not to pick cards that offer high gas rewards rates but with limited rewards redemption options. For instance, a card with a high gas rewards rate but no ability to redeem points for cash back does not have a clear audience in our eyes.
FAQs about gas credit cards: Editors’ answers
How do gas credit cards work?
There are two types of credit cards that could be considered gas credit cards:
Cards issued by gas stations: These gas station-branded cards often offer a gallon-based discount. This is effectively a rebate that may be applied as a statement credit, depending on the card.
General rewards cards with gas station purchase bonuses: These are more traditional rewards credit cards that include gas as one of the bonus categories in which you can earn cash back or rewards. Your earnings are based on how much you spend on gas. These credit cards may also offer cash back or rewards in categories other than gas.
Each card issuer has its own rules for gas rewards, so pay attention to the fine print.
Is a gas credit card worth it?
Whether a gas credit card is worth it depends on how much you drive. Truckers, rideshare drivers and those with long commutes might want to consider a gas credit card — especially one with a higher rewards rate.
If you don’t spend a lot on gas, it might make sense to get another type of rewards card that includes gas stations as a smaller rewards category.
Do gas credit cards help you build credit?
Yes, a gas credit card can help you build credit as long as certain criteria are met. First, the card issuer must report your credit activity to the three major credit bureaus. Most major issuers do, but you can always call the company to confirm before applying. Next, you’ll need to pay your gas credit card bill on time every month. This will help you build a positive payment history, which is generally the most important factor that determines your credit scores.
Paying your statement balance in full by the due date can help you avoid interest charges and keep your credit utilization rate low. Your utilization rate — or the percent of your available credit you’re using at any given time — is another factor that affects your credit. Keeping it under 30% is generally better for your scores.
