You are better off staying with a bank. I lost my card, called them and they said they will send me a new card. Not a problem, found my card they refused to reactivate it. They would not let me get a temporary card until my card came in the mail. I also could not do a cash pick up either. I was without money for a week. I ended up opening an account with Wells Fargo.
I have had 2 Amex cards for over 12 years. They have out sourced their costumer service, it is impossible to get ahold of a manager and their wait times are upwards of half hour. As of right now they froze my card because I have a mailing address not a physical address, claimed they sent a mailer to me to advise me on the changes (they didn't) it has been 47minutes and I am STILL trying to get them to string together enough sentences to understand what is going on. I have been transferred 4 times, been asked the same questions repeatedly and still have no idea if my card is active or not yet.
SAD TO SEE SUCH A GREAT COMPANY TURN TO GARBAGE SO QUICKLY
If you try to spend the entire balance you are rejected. They charge you a dollar for that. In fact they charge a dollar to check the balance so if you have a 100 dollar card you have to keep your purchase below 99 in order for it to be accepted. They can't be up front about taking that dollar from you, they have to cheat to get it. If they just stated they will not let you spend the last dollar and they planned to keep it I might just ignore that but they are dishonest.
I've been using this for years now instead of a traditional bank account. I went through a tough time financially and this was my only option. I have recovered but have no desire now to open a regular bank account. It's the best alternative over a prepaid debit card. I've got the active "checking" portion of my account and a reserve "savings" portion. I just used online bill pay to pay all my bills. There are literally no fees. No overdraft fees, no account maintenance. The only fee you might have is a charge for using an ATM. Everything about this has greatly improved since I opened my account, customer service, ATM availability, etc. AMEX has realized they are on to something and they have stepped up. The only down side is I wish there were more atms to use for free.
I applied for the American Express Green Card today.
With a new bonus of 20,000 points for $1,000 spent during the first three months and the added benefit of being apart of the AMEX Family made this card my must have! Super excited to get it! I was approved with a 649 EQ!!
