When I was 18 and still in high school, I dealt with an eye disease that sent me to a specialist weekly. I found out a few years later when applying for a home loan that these medical accounts were in collections. My mom never paid any of the debts, but didn't tell me. When I found out, I set up payment arrangements on all of them and have since paid them off. But they are still negatively affecting my score. I've found companies that I could pay to help me increase my score, but it seems there has got to be a way to do that myself without paying someone!
