First off, and most importantly, despite my issues with this card, I recommend it.  For those looking to maximize your cash back, having this, the Chase Freedom, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred, and your choice of "backup" (Quicksilver, Citi Double Cash, or a high points travel card) means you'll likely average 3.5% cash back on all your purchases throughout the year, and significantly more the first year thanks to all the intro offers.

I was looking to build my credit.  I spent my early years opposed to credit cards in general, but with the current offers out there, it was feeling pretty silly not to take advantage.  I have a tendency to over research everything, which is what I did in this instance.  My credit wasn't terrible (670), but I wanted to get it above 720 as quickly as possible.  My research pointed me to Capital One or Discover as being the best in the business for a variety of reasons.  After a lot more research, I chose the Discover it card.  I was instantly approved for a $1400 CL, and rejected for the 0% intro APR, instead being put straight into the highest APR they had.  I somewhat understood the second decision, but with a household income exceeding $200k I was flabberghasted the CL was so low.  In fact it was far too low.  Not only that, but carrying a small balance is supposed to help you grow your credit faster.  Frustrated, I immediately applied for the CapitalOne VentureOne card.  Similarly, I was instantly approved, this time for a $10k limit.  They gave me the middle tier APR, and 15 months of 0% APR.

My experience with CapitalOne has been better in almost every way.  The only thing "better" about the Discover card was it shipped within 3 business days, 7 days earlier than CapitalOne.  Other than that, I've used the cards about the same.  Thanks to CapitalOne's intro 20k miles offer, I have 26k miles after 5 months, which means CapitalOne has paid me about $260 to use their card.  I have about $60 in cash back from Discover, in comparison.  Furthermore, when I first recieved the card, the first thing I asked customer service was whether I had to enroll for the 5% cash back, to which they replied "no."  As soon as I started using the card it was pretty obvious I did have to enroll, which while simple, makes using this card more work than CapitalOne.  Same with redeeming rewards.  As simple as Discover is, Purchase Eraser is the best rewards redemption program by a country mile, IMO.  It's super easy, and you don't hurt your own cash back like you do with statement credit.

Finally, while I definitely get compliments on this card (love the look), it loses more ground to CapitalOne for not having a chip.  I take almost all my vacations in Europe, so having no foreign transaction fees was a requirement, but without a chip, should I use Discover, I'll once again have to be one of the silly Americans asking clerks to dig out and dust off their swipe machines.

P.S. 3 months in and I requested a CLI as directed by customer service.  They increased my CL from $1400 to $1600.  I've since applied for 2 more cards and recieved CLs of $6500 and $4000.  I'm not sure what the deal is with Discover and their crazy low limits.  Ultimately it doesn't matter as I only ever plan on using this card in its 5% categories going forward, which cap at $1500 per quarter.

Approved! Helpful to 4 out of 4 people

I don't have many credit references. I only have one credit card with best buy with 1k CL and always paid on time.  I have 5 student loans. Overall I have about 5 years of credit history. My credit karma scores with both TU and EQX were 692. I have an annual salary of 26k.  They rated the Discover IT card as GOOD and after reading the reviews I thought I would go ahead and apply and was approved instantly. I called customer service and they were able to tell me I was approved $6400! I haven't received the card yet but can't wait to start building my credit history/score! :)
