Because American Express performs a credit inquiry on your account when you apply. Applying for credit is not good for your credit score. This is repeated in every credit tip article on the web.

 How many inquiries do you have? 36 points is alot, so  I suspect you have something else going on. I would go over your credit report again and look for other changes. When i app. for amex I took a 1 point hit on experian.
