Although I agree that the annual fee seems insulting at first, the customer service and benefits received with this card far outweigh the cost in value.  The concierge service planned a trip for me and my fiancee to Italy and Greece, and the experience was seamless & priceless (and not overwhelmingly expensive).  While we were there, my identity was hacked, and Amex not only caught it within 24 hours but also got me a replacement card the next day AND washed the fraudlent charges without difficulty.  That kind of service is more than I can say about some other credit lenders....

 AE is the oldest CC I hold, since1982.  Started with a Gold later upgraded to a Platinum at no charge.  Because of their understanding and outstanding service this is the ONLY card I use.  All the hipper of other cards is just that especially cards with variable interest.  Like every thing you buy you most be careful in your selection which mostly are personal applied to your situation.  By the way I'm not a millionaire and only made slightlily above average wage when I was working.  Which is something I appreciated coming from AE  Oh, I don't work for AE either.

The best thing about the card is they wave fees every year. Also this card have No spending limit. I charge 80,000 pound in london with no problem. I have this card since 1998.
