If a collection company tells me to call a law firm to settle the debt, can I dispute it?
Portfolio Recovery Associates is reporting a debt for Citibank, Citibank is not reporting any debts, but this collection agency is. I called them recently (PRA) and wanted to inquire about the debt, but PRA gave me a number to call instead as I was told it was another department. I took the number and called it and the automated service came up stating that it was Cooling Winter Law Firm. I am not sure who this law firm is, but does this mean that they own the debt now and I can properly dispute PRA since they no longer own the debt? what is the best way to tackle this issue and this debt that is being reported?
