debt settlement letter
I have been paying a debt collector for 3 years for a medical bill, they automatically deducted it from a credit card. my credit card expired, I called them to give them my new expiration date and they said they could no longer accept the payment I was making. they wanted a much, much higher amount and if I didn't agree they would turn me over to the credit reporting agencies. I told her that I would continue to make the same payment on their website. they sent me a letter stating; I have the opportunity to settle this account for 65% off the total amount due, if the payment is paid by due date 5/6/15. I was going to pay this settlement amount before it was due. but today on 4/25/15 it was turned over to collections in the credit reporting bureaus. what can I do? why did they turn it over before the due date on the letter, before I had the chance to pay the settlement. should I pay the settlement amount and then dispute it?
