Collection on 2007 student loan
In February 2013, I had my 2012 tax return garnished due to an erroneos collection on a 2007 student loan debt. I went to school for 1 week at FSU, dropped the classes, refused the loan and kept all the paperwork. FSU returned all but $551. to Sallie Mae. The $551. was paid to a mandatory Health Insurance Fund, which I never used. I've been communicating with Sallie Mae, government entities and FSU. I have the journal entries that show the total loan amount along with the $551. paid to the insurance fund. I've faxed all this to FSU. They sent a letter to me stating they would refund me $644. (interest and penalites). I said they should pay the lending institution (per Dept. of Education). They said they had taken care of it, but as of 5/2/13, they have not. I work for a Federal institution, as a temporary employee, and have been applying for 4 years for government jobs. I know you cannot be hired if you are in default of a government loan. I cannot seem to resolve this error. I am not rich. I would appreciate any help or suggestions that are out there. I've even contacted a Jacksonville, Fl news person to seek help!
