Yes, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express costs a lot of money. But there are tons of secrets for how to get your money back. We’ll show you how.
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card is one of the best cards available for quickly reaching elite Medallion® status on Delta flights.
Still, it comes with a $195 annual fee — not chump change by any means.
You can reach elite status even faster with the Delta Reserve Credit Card (This offer is no longer available on our site) if you’re willing to pay a $450 annual fee.
If you’re willing forego the elite mileage boosts for a smaller annual fee ($0 intro, $95 after first year), consider the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card’s little brother.
From cardholders in the last year
In this guide, we’ll cover what you need to know to get the most value out of the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card. We’ll go over how to use the major features, as well as some of the lesser-known features that can still put big bucks back in your pocket.
That way you can make sure the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card will be a boon to your wallet, not burn a hole in it.
The easiest way to earn back your annual fee is with the companion certificate, which can be worth several hundred dollars depending on how you redeem it. The certificate is valid for one round-trip Main Cabin companion ticket within the contiguous United States (you pay applicable taxes and fees).
However, the companion certificate can be tricky to redeem as several restrictions apply to its redemption. For example, you can only get seats in certain service classes and it’s not available on certain flights or in certain markets.
Still, it can be worth it if you time it right. “I used the companion certificate and flew my wife to L.A. We got about $1,000 in benefits,” says Jack Krupey, credit card expert at Credit Shout.
The companion certificate is currently limited to flights in the contiguous United States (unless you live in a non-contiguous state or territory).
Thankfully, your SkyMiles are somewhat easier to redeem for flights than the companion certificate. Simply book your flight from the main Delta page, making sure to select “Show Prices in Miles” within the search window.
MQMs are a whole different ballgame. You can reach elite status with different amounts of MQMs: silver (25,000 MQMs), gold (50,000 MQMs), platinum (75,000 MQMs), and diamond (125,000 MQMs).
Each level unlocks new treasures, starting with perks such as waived bag fees and complimentary upgrades at the silver level.
You’ll earn MQMs at different levels of spending. You’ll get 10,000 MQMs (and 70,000 bonus miles) if you spend $3,000 in purchases within your first three months as a cardholder.
Spend $25,000 or more in eligible purchases in any calendar year and you’ll earn another 10,000 MQMs. And if you spend $50,000 or more in eligible purchases with the card in that same year, you’ll earn another 10,000 MQMs.
While the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card offers a lot of monetary value if you play your cards right, there are a lot of smaller benefits that can help turn your trip into smooth sailing.
You’ll be among the first in line to board, so you won’t have to battle everyone in a Gladiator-style match for overhead bin space.
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card also allows you to get your first checked bag free on Delta flights, which is a $25 value per flight.
For example, if you fly four times per year — out and back again — with a checked bag in each direction, that’s all you’ll need to fully recoup the annual fee of this card.
You can call up the American Express Global Assist® hotline and roadside assistance hotline if you run into any snags while you’re away from home, such as a broken-down beater or a sickness in a foreign country. Note: you need to be more than 100 miles away from home to use the global assist hotline for non-planning purposes.
When traveling, you and up to two friends can even hide away in any Delta Sky Club® lounge for a reduced price of just $29 each per visit, as long as you have your Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card with you.
If there’s anything we’ve learned from Murphy’s law, it’s that something will go wrong. When that happens, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card benefits have you covered.
If you’re renting a car with your card and decline the optional collision insurance, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card will cover damage to the car in case of an accident or if it’s stolen. However, it’s important to note that this is secondary coverage which means it will only kick in once your primary auto insurance benefits are exhausted.
If you bust yourself up while on the road, you’re also covered with travel accident insurance.
If a baggage handler gets a little frisky with your luggage, you can be reimbursed up to $1,250 for a carry-on bag and up to $500 for a checked bag through the baggage insurance plan.
You’re also eligible for return protection with your card. If you want to return something you purchased with your Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card but the merchant won’t take it back, American Express may refund the cost for you for up to 90 days from purchase (up to $300 per item, up to $1,000 maximum per year).
And if certain types of card purchases are accidentally broken or stolen within those first 90 days, you can get a refund through the purchase protection program (for up to $10,000 per occurrence and up to $50,000 maximum per year).
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card doesn’t have to be a drag on your wallet. You can fully recoup the cost of this card every year by using the companion certificate and free checked bags alone.
Perks such as priority boarding, the Global Assist® hotline and the roadside assistance hotline only sweeten the deal.
