I'm considering consolidating my credit card debt. I'm wondering if anyone has done this before?
Good question? Vote for this

I understand that the amount consolidated is counted towards your income in that tax year, is that correct? What are pros and cons of consolidating, and how do I find a credible agency to work with?

There's really no reason to pay anyone to consolidate your loans for you.  You can do it yourself by getting an unsecured loan from your bank or credit union (probably better deal thru CU).  Further, I would not do this unless you are D-U-N done with using your credit cards.  If not, you will only get yourself into (more) trouble because then you'll have more debt on your cards and the consolidation loan.  Most important, put together a budget so that you won't have to worry about doing this again.  Good luck.

Avoid this if possible.  If your credit score isn't too horrible you can get a loan though a service like Lending Club.  If you have a problem with credit, cut up the cards and make a budget like sfbrown said. If you are in a position to pay your debts off, pay everything you can on the balances that carry the highest interest rate and pay minimum payments on everything else.  Once you pay off that first card, take everything you were paying on it and apply it to the card with the next highest rate, including the minimum you were already paying.  Continue until all is paid off.  This is often called the "debt snowball".  I'm actually doing this right now.  There are calculators on the internet that will even show you how long it will take to pay everything off.  For it to work, you have to have a very strict budget and stick to it so that every dollar you spend is spent wisely and any extra goes to pay off debt.
