I've been home for two years since high school saving money to move out and would much rather buy than rent. I've applied for credit cards which has hurt me MOST. How do I get approved for a low limit card? I would like to raise my credit to at least a 690. Being only 20, noone will approve me. Is there a company that will?

Hi there an congrats for starting out working on your credit. You should know that every card has it's requirements, some are only for good or excellent credit and applying for them would be a waste and just ruin your score. I would say you go to creditcards.com they have the credit cards categorized by credit score requirements. You can also use their Credit Match feature which will tell you which cards you will most likely qualify for. When I started out in 2008 it was Capital One that gave me a card for $500, by now I have a score of 760 and credit limits of $6000 so all you need in consistency with your payments and patience.

Oh and by the way the reason you were denied credit has nothing to do with your age, and as a matter of fact creditors may not take that factor into their decision, the only reason for not being approved is your lack of credit history which is required for this specific card. Hello, Have you tried a secured card? If you have the funds Bank of America and Capital One offer great secured cards. Bank of America graduates (unsecures) after 9 months. If you would prefer an unsecured card bestbuy has a MasterCard that almost everyone can get. You will most likely get a limit of $100 but its a start. They have a prequalification site so you dont have to be hit with a hard inquiry to tell if you can get a card.

As the last person stated above I also started out with a Capital One credit card. You may have to start out with a card that has a higher interest rate as myself. As well as you may have an annual fee. This seems bad but it will help your credit in the end. Just keep up with your payments and do not max out the card. After you have established your credit with a company for about a year your credit score will go up and you will be able to get more cards without annual fees and high interest rates. I am 22 and I have a credit score of 730.
