When the SSA-1099 becomes available each year
Your SSA-1099 for the most recent tax year is available online starting February 1. If you’d rather wait for a paper copy, the Social Security Administration mails statements out each January, though you can often access the online version first.
If you don’t have a my Social Security account yet
Creating an account takes just a few minutes. You’ll need to verify your identity, typically through ID.me, a third-party identity verification service, using details like your Social Security number and a photo ID. Once your account is set up, you can access your SSA-1099 immediately, along with other services like your benefit verification letter.
What if you can’t verify your identity online
If you’re unable to create or verify your Social Security account, call the Social Security Administration’s automated phone line at 1-800-772-1213, available 24/7, to request a replacement SSA-1099 (say “1099” when prompted). You can also contact your local Social Security office directly if the phone system doesn’t resolve the issue.
Who doesn’t get an SSA-1099
If Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is the only payment you receive from Social Security, you won’t get an SSA-1099 at all, since SSI isn’t taxable. If you’re a noncitizen living outside the United States who received or repaid Social Security benefits, you’ll get Form SSA-1042S instead—the equivalent benefit statement for nonresident aliens—and it’s available online the same way.
