There is no scoring difference between "paid in full" and "settled for less". Of course, if your credit is under review by an actual person rather than a computer, "settled for less" will not look as good as "paid in full" to lenders. Either way, if the account is Charged off or a collection, it already looks bad, so if you can save some money, do the settlement. The best thing to try to get is a "pay for delete agreement" but they can be difficult to get sometimes, but it is something you should read about.
