Is the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card worth it?

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is great for casual travelers who want a seamless experience. The straightforward perks and benefits are easy to use and will make your trips more enjoyable.

While the rewards flow bountifully, if you’re scared off by expensive annual fees, you might want to look elsewhere.

But if you’re willing to pay the upfront cost for having this card, it could help you save a lot more money on travel than it costs you.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card at a glance

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card’s best perks and features

Big sign-up bonus

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card comes with a big sign-up bonus of 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases during the first 3 months that you have the card.

The spending requirement works out to more than $1,300 a month. So if you’re not prepared to spend this kind of cash, you may want to look at other premium rewards cards that offer more valuable bonuses.

Generous travel credit

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card comes with a $300 travel credit each year, which helps offset the annual fee.

The only catch? To earn the credit, you have to book directly through Capital One’s own travel portal. But you should be able to make all of your usual travel reservations there, including booking airfare, hotels and rental cars.

The card also offers solid rewards for travel spending and bonus categories that are on par with other premium rewards cards.

You’ll earn …

Anniversary bonus miles

Starting after your first year, you’ll receive 10,000 bonus miles each year on the anniversary of your account opening. You can use these miles just like you would with the sign-up bonus or the rewards you earn for everyday spending. That’s worth $100 toward travel when you book through Capital One.

Combined with the $300 travel credit, these two perks should help you offset the annual fee as long as you take at least one trip per year.

Airport lounge access

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card also comes with airport lounge access to help you relax before your flight.

As a cardholder, you and two guests will have access to more than 1,300 lounges around the world, including Capital One Lounges and, with enrollment, Priority Pass™ lounges.

What are the drawbacks of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card?

The annual fee is expensive

We’re not going to sugarcoat it: $395 is an expensive annual fee.

While the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card can pay for itself if you use the card’s excellent benefits and rewards, you’ll have to bear the upfront costs of the annual fee.

Transferring your points could be a headache

Most of Capital One’s transfer partners are foreign.

While some of these foreign airlines present great values, the value you can get from the transfer depends on your taking an international trip. Plus, it can be a headache to navigate through unfamiliar websites and figure out how to redeem your miles through them. There’s also the trust factor of transferring your points to an airline you’ve never heard of before.

Unfortunately, Capital One doesn’t partner with any domestic airlines where you can transfer your points.

How to redeem your Capital One miles

You can redeem Capital One miles directly through Capital One for 1 cent each. Whether you want cash back or travel rewards, if you’re looking for a simple way to use your points, redeeming directly through Capital One is the way to go.

But it’s worth noting you can also transfer your points to another rewards program. While this could potentially give you a better value, it also requires more elbow grease. Capital One’s airline transfer partners are foreign, so if you want to transfer your points, this option is only valuable to you if you’re flying internationally.

Other cards to consider

If the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card doesn’t seem like the right fit, here are some other travel cards you might be interested in.

Credit Karma’s methodology

Credit Karma uses qualitative and quantitative measures to review travel and premium credit cards. Our goal is to help you understand a card’s most useful features — and where it may fall short compared to other options.

We take into account factors such as unique rewards and benefits, ease of redeeming rewards, fees and rates, transfer partners, lounge access and rewards rates.

Credit Karma editors have also built some proprietary metrics to measure the value of rewards credit cards.

Our point valuations estimate how much rewards programs are worth. We look at both the value you could get by redeeming your points directly through a credit card issuer, as well as the value you could get by transferring your points and miles to an airline or hotel rewards program.

Instead of just telling you how many miles you could earn, the editors’ estimated bonus value multiplies the sign-up bonus by the reward program’s point valuations to tell you how much we believe they’re worth.

Our goal is that these metrics will help you decide whether the card’s rewards and benefits are worth it for you.

Nice Perks

Credit Karma Member

You will get the whole 400$ annual fee right back as 300$ travel credits and 100$ annual miles. Also I got to use 5% cashback on travel booking. Once I booked the tickets and I found a better price somewhere and when I called they happily matched the price and gave back the difference fare.
