your credit report presents a rolling 2 to 7 yr picture of your credit obligations and most if it has nothing to do with what you may or may not be able to afford, but, rather, what people reading your file believe you can afford. you even go so far as to state the only thing you have 'on time' is a student loan, but, you really want someone to loan you the money for a new car? If I came to you with that picture, would you loan ME $15K? From the sounds of it, you are WAY overextended.. (you owed 16K, but only paid off 10K, and you're still having problems making the payments on the debt you already have, but, you want to take on a new car payment, too..  people are already chasing you down for the debts you already owe.. what assurance does anyone have you'll make the new  car payment on time...?? then you say "  so everything on my credit report that was active or in collections.. The only thing i have still is my monthly ON TIME student loan payment. " and " And they want a co-signer for a $12000 car i want.. Why? I've never been late on a loan before!!!  " If you were on time all that time, then why is your stuff in collections?? time for you to wake up and face facts.. you were a very poor credit risk, and maybe times are getting better, but untill you can make 'every payment, on time, every time" then things aren't gonna improve.. your denial isnt hurting anyone but you.

your credit scores say everything about how well your ability to pay your obligations on time. you should work on paying down all of your debt and open a secured card in your name to build your credit to show lenders you can pay your bills on time and after a year you should be able to get a car loan without a cosigner granted you pay everything on time and boost your score
