Regardless of your age, if your 401k plan allows you to make a transfer to your IRA, you probably should do it. The reason is that you have a much wider universe of investments to choose from with an IRA. Most 401k plans do not have the greatest investment options, but your plan may be an exception. You'll need to do the legwork on that part of it. Be sure to do a direct (trustee to trustee) transfer so that there is no witholding taken out.
