Debt free-poor credit score
Good question? Vote for this

I have been debt free since May 2008. My credit has not only stayed lowe, it's gone into the poor status since then. What can I do to raise my credit score? Someone suggested getting a credit card and paying off monthly. I applied and was denied AND all the "build your credit" credit cards have extremely high APR/fees. What is a "good" APR for a credit card w/ no debt?!

That is the price of poor credit. Get a secured credit card. Public Savings and Orchard Bank have good options.

have you pulled your credit reports? just because you are debt free since 2008, doesnt mean that is whats on your reports...pull a merged credit report with your scores and see for yourself exactly whats holding you back. if it were me, I would hold off on applying for anything untill i at least saw my reports... otherwise you may just be wasting time and money on secured cards, ( which are a rip off to start with) and do some digging into your credit files first. then once you make sure you are credit clean, take your reports down to a local bank you have an account with, and speak with the mgr there. to see if they can offer you anything. you laready have a relationship with them so, qualifiyng for a $500 card with them should be easier than qualifying for anything else... show them the credit reports you pulled and get their advice on exactly wht you need to do, to get a credit card. this way, you get a direction to go to get a real credit card, and not a secured one, without dinging your score with a credit pull. its what i did, and the next week, I got a capital one card through credit karma, and I dint have to pay out anything to get it.. money always feels better when it stays in my wallet, and I'll bet you'd agree with me.   good luck!

Hi there and thanks for the shout out, AppleRules! Sorry you've been having problems applying for credit cards, Zee23. You may want to try a secured credit card. If you're unaware of how a secured credit card works, it requires a security deposit and for a Public Savings Bank secured Visa credit card, your security deposit is your credit line. Therefore, you can choose any amount between $300 - $2,000 and whatever amount you choose, you'll send us that amount and then we'll send you a card. Our card has no interest rates on purchases for the first 6 months and we don't check your credit upon application. As long as you can verify the following 4 pieces of information, you will be accepted: 1. Be able to successfully verify your identity 2. Be able to successfully fund your security deposit with a minimum of $300 3. Be at least 18 4. Be able to show your ability to repay your debt each month If our Public Savings Bank secured Visa seems like something you'd like to move forward with, you can apply right here: http://www.creditkarma.com/creditcard/publicsbsc01 Have a wonderful day and best credit building wishes to you, Zee23!
