Statute Of Limitations is referring to the period of time debt owner can sue you in court for that debt, every State has different length for different types of debt, so you need to googling it. It's independent from the length of time a account can be on your credit report, officially per FCRA, the charge-offs/collections can be on your report for 7 years plus 180 days from Date Of First Delinquency. Once it's beyond the SOL? You can't be sued  for that particular debt 'legally", once it's beyond the 7 1/2 reportable period?  It can no longer be included in your credit report. However that debt isn't automatically discharged after those periods, meaning you still responsible for it, the debt owner just cannot force you to pay or put it on your credit report, but it would still remain with-in their own internal records.

The "statute of limitations" in Massachusetts for debt is 6 years for most debt. That said, it is well expired. If anyone contacts you about the debt, you can send them a "cease and desist letter" telling them to no longer contact you about this debt as the sol has expired.

For the sake of discussion here... "I haven't heard from xyz since 2008..." doesn't establishes the DOFD or that's when the clock on SOL starts.
