If they have been closed and charged off and sold to a collection company you should dispute the balance as it should be showing $0 on the original account. Doing so should help improve things as it will stop affecting your utilization, however, when you dispute an account and it updates, that will cause some harm, but the good done by removing this from your utilization should overide the damage of the update. Note: if the account has been currently updating, then no further harm will come, updates only hurt when an account has not updated in a long time as the update makes the negative fresh.
