Close to paying off 3rd home with TOTAL debt < $10,000; why 743???
Checked credit rating today and it is 743; do not understand why it is not higher. Our total debt is less than $10,000; we owe $2000 to American Express and $8000 on our (3rd) home.

We should have the highest credit rating possible.

First off, 743 is an excellent credit raiting.  Secondly, close to paying off and paid off are very different as far as your credit report is concerned.  If you'd like to increase your score more, ask for credit limit increases on cards with no balances, and use and pay off as many of your cards each month as you can.  If your AmEx is your only credit card account, then look into opening other accounts, because then it's a lack of total credit limit that's holidng you back.
