I've had this card for about 7 months, at the time my CK score was about 615, and my TU FICO was 615. Credit Karma recommended the card on my profile so I applied, instant approval for $500 CL.
At 6 months was expecting $250 CLI per their "steps", but got $1000 increase to $1500 CL.
I use the card like a debit card and pay the balance down to almost zero every 7 to 10 days. I get the 1.5% cash back rewards and easily get $20-$30 a month which offsets the annual $39 fee.
This and the other cards I have helped me raise my TU FICO from 518 in May 2012 to 665 in January 2014.
switchman70's response was:
several banks offer secured cards, I got mine through a company called elan financial. $300 seems to be the norm, but definitely the first place to go. I agree, stay away from the ones who charge fees like first premier and the such.
After 6 months or so with a secured card, it should be pretty easy to get a cap 1 card.
Another good builder tool is fingerhut (they should pay me a fee as often as I recommend them lol)

Really good info!
If you read most of the reviews, or have experience with Cap 1, they tend to be generous to people with limited or bad credit history, but they tend to be tight with intial credit limits as well as increases.
Very good response. I think an important part is realizing the balances/utilizations will not reflect correctly until the creditor reports to the bureaus, as stated above, and can cause confusion to users who link their accounts.
I got this card in March 2013, initial CL $300, automatic bump to $500 CL after 6 months per their "steps" program.
Credit Karma recommended this card to me on my profile, at the time my CK score was about 580 and my TU FICO was 577.
Since then I have other cards with rewards, so I seldom use this one - But was my first unsecured card since BK 7 discharge in Aug 2012.
If you are starting out or rebuilding I recommend this card to you.
Definitely the best for your credit report is deletion of the baddy. Addison is 100% right on, there are no guarantees if you pay the collection they will remove it, nor are they obligated to do so.
I had the same experience. Got the card with a CK score of 620 six months ago with $500 CL, got the increase today for $1500, current TU FICO 664.
I was pleasantly surprised with the nice increase as I was expecting only a $250 bump per their steps program.
I also use this card like a debit card and pay the balance weekly, I get the cash back credit on my statement for $20 - $30 a month.
I can attest to this, 519 in may 2012, Chap 7 discharged August 2012. Current TU FICO 646, new mortgage, 9 credit cards, auto loan, all from following CK advice and paying my bills on time.
Good deal Alex, I too really like the cash back deal from the quicksilver card. Last month I had Cap 1 send me a check for a whopping $31 which I stashed away in my mad money savings acct at the credit union.
Does anyone have another card where they actually send you a check for your rewards?
This is a high interest card, so carrying a balance is not worth it.
My daughter works at JCP and has been asking me to apply so she gets bennies from work. I applied yesterday and got instant approval for $500 and 20% off my purchase. There was a clearance sale going on, and the 20% applied we got almost $400 worth of clothes and shoes and paid $118. AWESOME.
The card is thru GECRB, the same as my Lowe's and Walmart Cards, so I'm familiar with managing the acct online.
Definitely happy for another trade line.
