ExxonMobil™ Smart Card review: Your mileage may vary

In a Nutshell

The ExxonMobil™ Smart Card allows you to shave off six cents from each gallon of gas you purchase at Exxon and Mobil gas stations, which means the relative value of your savings depends on your price of gas. You can’t use this card anywhere else, so other, more-versatile, cards with a similar rewards rate on gas purchases might be more useful. And while it doesn’t carry an annual fee, you won’t want to rack up a balance given the high purchase APR on this card.

We think it's important for you to understand how we make money. It's pretty simple, actually. The offers for financial products you see on our platform come from companies who pay us. The money we make helps us give you access to free credit scores and reports and helps us create our other great tools and educational materials.

Compensation may factor into how and where products appear on our platform (and in what order). But since we generally make money when you find an offer you like and get, we try to show you offers we think are a good match for you. That's why we provide features like your Approval Odds and savings estimates.

Of course, the offers on our platform don't represent all financial products out there, but our goal is to show you as many great options as we can.

What you need to know about the ExxonMobil™ Smart Card

A steady discount on every gallon

The most notable feature of the ExxonMobil™ Smart Card is its six-cent rebate for each gallon of Synergy-branded fuel you buy at Exxon or Mobil stations, with your savings applied as a statement credit at the end of each billing period. So if you buy 100 gallons of gas in a month, you’ll earn a statement credit of $6.

That’s not peanuts, but the relative value of your savings will depend on your price of gas. It can be helpful to consider this discount as a percentage, because that’s what you’ll often see when you compare it to other cards that offer savings on gas.

For example, if gas costs $2.50 per gallon in your area, six cents off is essentially a 2.4% discount. But other credit cards, like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, offer a fixed percentage rate — some as much as 4% — back on gas purchases.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that the ExxonMobilTM Smart Card card only earns this credit on gas purchased for personal, family or household reasons. If you’re looking for a business gas card, you might want to take a closer look at ExxonMobil’s business credit card options.

Two sign-up bonus options

The ExxonMobilTM Smart Card offers two sign-up bonus offers, but the one you get depends on how you choose to apply for the card.

If you apply for the card on the ExxonMobil website, you can earn a rebate of 12 cents on every gallon of Synergy gas you buy over the first two months the card is open. Or you can apply for the card through the company’s Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app and earn a sign-up bonus of 50 cents off each gallon of Synergy gas for one month after you open the card.

The in-app offer may appear to be a greater bonus, but the amount you earn will ultimately depend on how regularly you buy gas. If you fill up your tank every week like clockwork, then the 50-cent rate could earn you more in the end. But if you’re fueling up irregularly, there’s a chance you’d drive more in a second month and could benefit more from the two-month intro offer.

Carrying a balance will cost you

If you expect to carry a balance from month to month, this card probably isn’t for you. That’s because the ExxonMobil™ Smart Card comes with a whopping 27.49% variable APR on purchases. So carrying a balance could get costly.

If you want to get a cash advance from an ATM, it’s worse: You’ll pay a fee of either a flat $10 or 5% of the amount you withdraw (whichever is greater), plus a 29.99% variable APR on cash advances.

These high rates could end up costing you much more than what you’ll save at the pump when using the card.

You can only use the card — and redeem the rewards — at Exxon and Mobil gas stations

As far as purchases go, this card is accepted only at Exxon and Mobil gas stations. You can buy gas, car washes, snacks or whatever else your heart desires — but it has to be at these specific gas stations. And only gas purchases earn you rewards.

But ExxonMobil offers other ways to earn rewards without a credit card. The company’s rewards program, Exxon Mobil Rewards+, offers points for purchases made at its gas stations, including on non-gas purchases like snacks (which the credit card does not offer). This program is separate from the credit card’s rewards, too, so you can earn these rewards on top of the rewards you get from the ExxonMobilTM Smart Card.

Who this card is good for

If you fill up almost exclusively at Exxon or Mobil gas stations and want a simple discount card, the ExxonMobilTM Smart Card might be right for you. Other cards might offer a better rewards discount on gas, but the simplicity and ease of this card’s rewards system might be ideal if you don’t want to track complicated categories.

We also recommend this card for people who can pay off their credit card bill on time and in full each month. That’s because the ExxonMobil™ Smart Card comes with a sky-high variable APR on purchases. If you’re unable to pay off what you charge each month, your six-cent discount will be easily outweighed by interest charges.
