Closing Old Accounts with Zero Balance will Hurt your Credit Score.

Each account has a certain credit limit and the more credit you have been granted, the better your score.  I recommend not letting the zero balances remain for too long.  Best thing to do is make small purchases occasionally and pay those in full when the bill comes in.  That will keep the cards active and show good usage and payment histories, bot of which are good for your credit score.
