A credit union is owned and operated by the members.  It is a non-profit entity with all "so-called" profits going back to the members in the form of dividends.  The funds on deposit are not insured by FDIC, but by the National Credit Union Association, which is also a federal organization which supervises credit unions.

Banks are major corporations that are for-profit.  They tend to charge higher interest rates and be less "user friendly" than credit unions.

I have some funds in banks and some in a credit union, and soon all funds will be primarily in the credit union just because I like it much better.

It's a good idea to check out either entity based on the exzperiences of neighbors and friends and from your own research.
