Bankruptcy makes a bad mark on your credit report for 10 years.  Bad credit (late payments, missed payments) only stay for 7 years.  That's something to consider if your debt is credit cards, which are "unsecured" debts because there is nothing purchased on a credit card that a creditor can sell to reclaim the money.  A house or car is a different subject, because they can be reclaimed by the creditor.
