They can take as long as needed up to the expiration of the Statute of Limitations on Collections.  Most get tired of trying to collect from deadbeats, so they sell the account to a collection agency who is often a bit more aggressive in collection tactics and the collection agency may tire of deadbeats and sell the account to another agency. The originator of the card also has the option of taking the case to court to get a judgement.  So, it is best to clear up the accounts ASAP.  Saves a lot of grief that way.
