Time and money.
--

Time: It will take time (depending on the credit bureau, from 3 to seven years) before the derogatory remarks come off. You might be able to hurry that up if you explain to the creditors what happened, and ask if you can get a pay-for-removal arrangement (where you catch up on the payments (or pay off any debts otherwise) and they remove the derogatory remarks from the credit bureaus).

--

Money: on accounts that are still open, catch up on payments if you can, and keep making regular payments. Over time, things get better.

--

One other note - check with your creditors and see if they have a 'hardship' program. Many of the larger lenders (e.g. banks) usually do.
