They are known to place collections on the wrong people's reports. You can dispute the account with the credit bureaus or even better yet, hire a consumer law attorney that handles FDCPA cases and sue them. FDCPA (fair debt collection practices act).

File a dispute with the credit bureau(s) reporting it.  This means you have to get copies of the full credit reports from the three credit bureaus and proceed from there.  This topic has been addressed at least daily on this site.
