You should always apply for more credit than you will use. The purpose of a credit SCORE is to MANAGE the credit. You should NOT charge more than you can pay back at the end of the month, otherwise use cash. If you have poor credit you should Manage your credit and debt ratio so that you pay down the credit card to the point where you pay if off at the end of each month. If you are unemployed and have run into credit problems, then you are in one of the worst situations. Tighten the belt, volunteer (especially where food is served) and do as many “odds and ends” for enough money to pay for the rent/mortgage. To conserve on electricity, buy a power strip for your TV and anything else with a remote. Turn off the master switch on the power strip before going to bed. You’ll save Huge by the end of the month.
As far as credit cards, stay away from cards that have any annual fees including Airline cards. WE NEED TO REVOLT! You can still get rewards miles by the flights to take. The problem with airline cards is they charge a high annual fee and then make it very hard to redeem the free ticket. We don’t need this BS. Worst bank I’ve used was Chase. They called me everyday after I applied for a card. After 1 week, I told them to shove it. I don’t need Marketing calls and I certainly don’t need marketing calls for the Credit card I already Belong to ! I’m not your marketing experiment !"

Reply Cancel Replyi use the AmX blue and shop costco frequently - i had a limit of $27,000 and rate of 9.99% and balance if $11,000 - no late or delinq's - they didn't drop me last year but raised my rate to 15.99% and lowered my limit to $13,000 - no explanation except that they said they were doing this to "...most / all their customers.""

Reply Cancel Reply775 CreditKarma score, 765 Trans/Union FICO score: Approved, $3000 limit. Only use the card for the "3% restaurants/fast food" & at Costco, where Visa isn't accepted. My PENFED card gets 5% gas vs 3% Costco card & my Schwab card gets me 2% everywhere else vs 1% Costco card. Not to mention both are Visa's, so they are more widely accepted than AMEX.
If I wasn't such a cash-back nut, I wouldn't have bothered getting it. But if you only want 1 card, & don't want to juggle 3-4 cards to maximize you cash-back, this is a solid choice in my opinion."

Reply Cancel ReplyI was expecting an "instant" response but was told that if I was approved that I would recieve my cards and welcome packet within 14 days... not quite sure what that means... was I approved or declined? I guess I am used to instant gratification..."

Reply Cancel ReplyI work for Amex....We look at Experian first. We used to look at Transunion and switched a few years ago. Many things can affect why you may get approved or declined for a card. I have seen individuals with a score of 750 declined because of their debt to credit ratio. If someone has a few credit cards even if they are not using them then they have the ability to charge and carry a balance. All of these things are taken into consideration when and if a person gets approved for an Amex card. By the way on a True Earnings Business card you can receive 4% back on gas. Thanks, Guyamex"

Reply Cancel ReplyI am a student. I am looking for Amex card with $2000+ credit limit. My score is 729 with no debt, have 4 month credit history with Bofa ($1000 limit). I appreciate your reply."

Reply Cancel ReplyCredit details look good. The only draw back is the 4 months of credit history.

To amitpanchabh"
It doesn't look ok....common, $1,000 limit? and 4 month of credit history? You will not get an AmEx card, definitely not now when they are cutting off good customers.
Please don't encourage people to apply, and then, after he gets denied, explain that it is not as simple, many variables, etc....
With this type of info, he/she is much, much more likely to not be approved than approved by AmEx

3 years of 100% history
~5-10% cc balance and no mortgage.
Had an AMEX gold card, but they closed it back in January."

Reply Cancel ReplyUnfortunately, if they closed it. They probably won't approve you for another card in the near term.

I think Amex is full of it. THey closed all of my relatives' cards as well. And they have well over 700 score and income past 100k
chris91 at 11:01 am Dec 10
Reply Cancel ReplyThis is pure fiction. A 685 score is not "Excellent credit" by any FAKO estimator, especially not the real MyFICO one either. I would never believe AMEX would stoop so low as to approve below 700 since that's not the borrower they're looking for anymore."

Reply Cancel ReplyI applied last week and was denied. My score on here is 754 but apparently my fico score is in the lower 700's and they told me over the phone that I would need to have a fico score of at least 750 to qualify. They gave me a breakdown of what areas qualified me and what areas disqualified me and the two factors that denied me were number of inquiries on my record (about 9) and too low of credit score (about 720 from fico). Seems a bit harsh considering I have almost 3 years of perfect credit card use history, personal and auto loan history. I'm only 22 and have never had a negative mark on my credit history between 2 loans and 4 credit cards other than too many inquiries, if that doesn't get my credit score high enough what does?! Hopefully creditkarma will update their credit score approval data as it is way off from what american express told me directly."
bprice at 11:33 am Oct 15
Reply Cancel ReplyThanks for the comment. A few things to note. A 750 and 720 are not that different in terms of risk. When it comes to the CK score vs. FICO, you have to account for the bureau used. Secondly, 9 inquiries is a lot and 3 years credit history is also relatively short. Just a few things to keep in mind. We have a few features that should help address the issues. Stay tuned!

I hardly doubt its credit karma's fault. You applied for it, your responsible. They are just here to give us a free credit score, what bureau does that? Only Transunion. By the way, FYI American Express if for old people who have long credit histories. I know this because I've seen hardly any 20-30 year old people carry it. Only 35+"

Reply Cancel ReplyThats funny, my friend got American Express Gold Delta Skymiles card and he is only 19 with a 5k limit, Just shows how weird credit company approvals can be."

Reply Cancel ReplyApplied three weeks ago. Received email that could never find my app on their site. Called. Denied. Told Transunion credit score too low for card. Creditkarma says they use Transunion for scores. Creditkarma showed 744 when I applied. Shows 744 today. Someone is lying here. Bad system all around both here and at Amex."
possum09 at 10:06 am Sep 21
Reply Cancel ReplyCredit score is not the only criteria as we have mentioned before, income, past delinquencies, and other factors go into the credit decision.
CK Moderator
CK Moderator is right, possum09. That's on top of AmEx having their own special in-house system based on 'points'. You can have a fabulous basic mortgage-enhanced FICO (or FAKO), but you won't meet their criteria based on other things. I hope you return to the site to let us know what was on the official letter."
annoneil01 at 11:52 am Oct 6
Reply Cancel ReplyIt is also important to note that American Express does not often rely on TransUnion as their main source of credit research. They rely more on Experian than the other bureaus. If you are an existing AMEX customer, you'll notice this on your credit profile."
eddiejov55 at 1:21 am Oct 12
Reply Cancel ReplyI tried to post this before but it was censored. AmEx told me that I did not qualify because my credit score was too low. That was the ONLY reason given by the AmEx rep. I was told by AmEx it was using the score from TRANSUNION and it was not the same number that CreditKarma reported to me from the same place...TRANSUNION. Also CreditKarma shows the average score for obtaining the card much lower than my credit score reported by CreditKarma. My point was and still is: Two different scores from the same place. Something is wrong. Also posting the average scores to obtain the card is misleading at best. I now have a hard look at my credit report. I understand that there are many factors that can be used but whem AmEx says credit score was "TOO LOW" as the only reason and CreditKarma says it was 744 well above the average than I wasted my time and damaged my score by misinfo."
possum09 at 12:03 pm Oct 16
Reply Cancel ReplyPossum, I too had 744 exact score, and got denied....I agree with you that posting the "average" scoree is very misleading...after the reading the comments, I thought I would get denied, but applied anyway, against better judgement."
744 Credit Carma score
140K annual income
no lates or delinq in the last 6.5 years
I think applying to cards based on Credit Carma estimations (average, poor, excellent credit, etc.) is a very bad idea, and something one should avoid.

Reply Cancel ReplyUnfortunately, it is not as simply as just a credit score. There are dozen of variables that go into credit card approvals. We have an article where you can learn more about Credit Card Approval Insights.

I think you guys aren't playing the credit game. You get a credit card and use it, pay it off, then just chill for about 2 years (no inquiries during that time). Then prescreened credit offers will start coming in the mail. One thing I know about American Express, if they send you an invitation to apply, its a sure bet you will get the card."

Reply Cancel ReplyYou have to watch for your rebate calculations. I have lots of travel expenses with Hotwire and airline companies and they calculated it under "everything else" This is outright trickery. you have to guard the calculations like a hawk"
