Have had this card for a little over a year, received $130. The cash back isn't cash, it's a credit at Costco. I have an executive membership with Costco that pays 2%. That was about $165. Between the card and the membership that's $295. Covers the membership fee and a whole bunch of food, booze and shoes. I like it.

Contrary to what this page says there IS a limit to "cash back". It's $500.00 USD.

A good deal. We get a couple hundred bucks back each year. It's more than a store credit. You can't cash it at a bank, but the Costco customer service desk will simply cash this rebate check for you if you want the $$ and don't wish to spend it at the store. Or you can spend part of it on purchases at the register and the balance will be given back to you in cash. We use it for many purchases and like the "free" money back every spring.

I have the business version of this card. Basically the same except that you get 4% on gas instead of 3% (just changed from 5% down to 4%). Best card I got with great customer service. I get about 700 dollars cash back each year from costco for it. Just a great card, period.

I have to respectfully disagree with two previous posters. My cash back was $700. I went to the Costco customer service desk and redeemed it for cash with no purchase requirement.

To comment on previous posters:
1. The $500 yearly limit is for the Costco 2% Executive Bonus (not a part of this card). This card does not have a limit on the amount of cash back you can earn.
2. You can redeem the yearly check for cash by going to a register and cashing it in. The check even states you can redeem for cash. The Executive Membership 2% Bonus (not part of this card) cannot be redeemed for cash.

Thankyou for the first positive reply on this site!!! :) I am trying to research and read about these cards so I can make an educated decision. And most negative comments sound more like poor planning, weak research and personal problems to me. Thankyou for the input, you rock!! And for people with "the worst experience of their lives!" posts, grow up and try posting something useful.

I agree with cash back comments but my complaint is that I always pay twice or three times my minimum payment monthly, am never late, and have had the card for over two years. They just raised my interest rate for no reason. As soon as I pay off the card I'm not using again. This is not fair to consumers who use credit responsibly.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. I have a 745 credit score, had the card for 5+ years, used frequently and paid off the entire balance every month on time. Was a seemingly perfect credit card customer until late last year when they cancelled my card without warning. Will never have an American Express card again and actually am considering not shopping at Costco. Also, some previous posts stated that the cash back isn't cash but a Costco credit, that is only partially true. If you take the voucher to Costco, they will give you cash instead of credit towards Costco purchases.

They did the same thing to me. It's just how it was last year, they canceled a lot of customers.

You have to watch for your rebate calculations. I have lots of travel expenses with Hotwire and airline companies and they calculated it under "everything else" This is outright trickery. you have to guard the calculations like a hawk

Applied three weeks ago. Received email that could never find my app on their site. Called. Denied. Told Transunion credit score too low for card. Creditkarma says they use Transunion for scores. Creditkarma showed 744 when I applied. Shows 744 today. Someone is lying here. Bad system all around both here and at Amex.

Credit score is not the only criteria as we have mentioned before, income, past delinquencies, and other factors go into the credit decision.

CK Moderator is right, possum09. That's on top of AmEx having their own special in-house system based on 'points'. You can have a fabulous basic mortgage-enhanced FICO (or FAKO), but you won't meet their criteria based on other things. I hope you return to the site to let us know what was on the official letter.

It is also important to note that American Express does not often rely on TransUnion as their main source of credit research. They rely more on Experian than the other bureaus. If you are an existing AMEX customer, you'll notice this on your credit profile.

I tried to post this before but it was censored. AmEx told me that I did not qualify because my credit score was too low. That was the ONLY reason given by the AmEx rep. I was told by AmEx it was using the score from TRANSUNION and it was not the same number that CreditKarma reported to me from the same place...TRANSUNION. Also CreditKarma shows the average score for obtaining the card much lower than my credit score reported by CreditKarma. My point was and still is: Two different scores from the same place. Something is wrong. Also posting the average scores to obtain the card is misleading at best. I now have a hard look at my credit report. I understand that there are many factors that can be used but whem AmEx says credit score was "TOO LOW" as the only reason and CreditKarma says it was 744 well above the average than I wasted my time and damaged my score by misinfo.

Possum, I too had 744 exact score, and got denied....I agree with you that posting the "average" scoree is very misleading...after the reading the comments, I thought I would get denied, but applied anyway, against better judgement.
744 Credit Carma score
140K annual income
no lates or delinq in the last 6.5 years
I think applying to cards based on Credit Carma estimations (average, poor, excellent credit, etc.) is a very bad idea, and something one should avoid.

Unfortunately, it is not as simply as just a credit score. There are dozen of variables that go into credit card approvals. We have an article where you can learn more about Credit Card Approval Insights.

I think you guys aren't playing the credit game. You get a credit card and use it, pay it off, then just chill for about 2 years (no inquiries during that time). Then prescreened credit offers will start coming in the mail. One thing I know about American Express, if they send you an invitation to apply, its a sure bet you will get the card.
