Because paying a month ahead now does not excuse the mistakes of your past when it comes to your credit report.  Your credit file gives new creditors an idea as to how well you will pay back the money they will allow you to borrow. 6 lates is a lot of times not to pay on something you owe.  Most lenders wil ask you to explain why you have neglected to pay a bill that many times, and if you don't have a really good excuse; you probably will be denied new lines of credit.
