REMOVING negative information BEFORE 7 years - Is it illegal or just policy?
Can, for example, a late payment that is correctly shown on a credit report from activity 6 years ago be removed prior to 7 years by law? The distinction in this question is that although it may be policy of the credit bureaus to keep it on for 7 years - is it illegal for them to remove it or just the accepted norm? I keep reading that it "may" remain on your report but not that it it law that it MUST. Any legal citation or link that shows that it MUST remain on an individuals credit report for 7 years AND that the bureaus do NOT have any discretion appreciated.

Required under Fair Credit Reporting Act, which is a federal regulation.  The requirement is to allow creditors the opportunity to see what your true credit history is for the past 7 years.
