if i close my open accounts that i do not use, will this help with my credit report?

Similar question has came up few times a day, I am just wondering where dose people get that idea from, by closing a account would be beneficial to their credit report/scores? I figure I would've come across that article by now, but no such luck.

Doing so would DAMAGE YOUR CREDIT!!!!!!! Do some reading before you screw your credit up.
