Preventing opening new credit accounts? Put a credit freeze on all three credit bureaus, you can find out how at each Bureaus's site.

-

To check if something already done? From your credit reports, see any new accounts you didn't apply or new inquiry(s).

-

Of course to check all your accounts often to see if any fraudulent charges pops up. If any of your credit cards offers "freeze" function like Discover? Might want to do so.
