Dropped collection account and huge points drops
WHOA! I've been using time and two secured credit cards with low utilization, prompt payments and my scores have gradually gone up. Then a large collection account dropped off and my TransUnion score dropped 7 points and Equifax dropped 12. At this rate I'll never see 700 here or on FICO.

Scores don't change at a fixed rate.  It's all a matter of how the vaious factors add up.  You want the collection removed even if it leads to a net loss of points as the collection will hold you back.  It will take time to build your credit.  7 and 12 points isn't much of a loss.  If you're going to worry over the numbers then set a larger threshold -- at least 20 points.
