does it affect credit score for an existing card to check credit when you request a higher limit?

If a hard inquiry is done to do so, yes it will ding your score from the hard inquiry. Hard inquiries do not cause that much damage though, unless you have a bunch of them.

If a hard inquiry is done then, yes, it will affect your score, but not a lot. Also, not all creditors do a hard inquiry when you're requesting a credit line increase. If they're going to, you should be alerted BEFORE you actually submit the request. If you don't see anything about it but you want to know for sure before you submit the request, contact the company and ask.
