The face value of the life insurance won't count.  You'd have to cash in the life insurance and, believe me, you don't get much!!  Look to the left on this page and see the "home affordability" calculator  Maybe you might not be able to BUY a home, but that's nothing to be ashamed of.  Renting is often  the better financial option for many people. . The landlord has to pay for the repairs.  When you own the home, all repair costs fall on you and that can be a problem sometimes. Been on both sides of that fence.
