Americans still digging their way out of the recession lowered their credit card debt by eight percent nationwide since January 2010, though national credit scores are still one point lower than last year, according to the U.S. Credit Score Climate Report released by CreditKarma.com.

California consumers cut their credit card debt by 9 percent in 2010, ending the year owing an average of $7,217. That's a little better than the U.S. average, according to San Francisco's CreditKarma.com, which tracks these things -- nationwide, the typical consumer cut their credit card debt by 8 percent over the course of the year to end at $7,404 in December.
