Most bad marks disappear after 7 years (bankruptcies take longer). Good marks will stay.
Say for example, you had a credit card account that you often paid late. You paid it in full and closed the account. Seven years from now, it would show simply as paid in full and closed with no reference to the late payments.

This account was in good standing. I only closed it because they were going to raise my rates. I don't have any late payments on my report for any of my accounts. Everything is in good standing as far as payments. I have several other accounts, I even paid my car off after I closed it, but ever since I closed this account, my credit score has been steadily declining.
