That's what happens when you cancel a card you have a good and long record on, it drops your credit score. See the following articles: How A Credit Card Limit Is Determined and Thinking about Canceling Your Credit Card?

The fact that you didn't consider any of this before you applied is pretty shocking. You didn't know that Sapphire isn't a service like Visa, MasterCard, Amex, and Discover and applied for it anyway? Wow, you might want to start paying attention before you apply for things. Also, it's common knowledge that if you have too many credit cards with the same issuer, they will deny you. I suggest you seek the services of a financial planner.

There's an easy way to fix this. Stop paying for so much in cash. Paying $60,000 in cash is silly when you can make the system work for you by using credit to pay for it. Pay for things with a credit card and then pay them off immediately. In fact, with online bill pay, you can pay immediately after you get home from making a purchase. Also, carrying a few credit cards is not what puts people in dire straits. Maxing out one's credit cards buying things they can't afford and then paying the minimum balance forever is what does that.

I loved my bank, heartbroken that they've sold all but the branches in one city in my state. Now I have to figure out what I'm gonna do with my money after having HSBC for a long time.

Either that or you already have a card from the same issuer.

Maybe you don't have a long enough credit history? Maybe you already have too many cards? Check your credit report card and you can probably figure out what it was. Oh, and I forgot, if you already have a card from the same issuer, sometimes they'll turn you down outright

Loving this card so far. Got it in July, had a CK of about 710, approved for 2k. Don't plan to use it to pay for anything I don't have money for, but I get cash back while I boost my credit history and scores.
