zero balance credit cards and lines of credit will it help my credit score to close a few?

As is covered very well in the credit education given in the articles here, each credit card has a credit limit, or maximum total you can charge.  Your credit score is based a great deal on how much credit you have available (the total of the credit limits of ALL credit cards).  If you close a credit card, you remove that credit limit from the total, making the total smaller.  Reduced credit total equals reduced credit score.

Doing that would HURT your credit, so don't do it. Take some time to do some reading and have a thorough understanding before making any changes to your credit.
