why is it more effective using several credit cards than just one? makes no sense

Hi scrape8182,

Can you clarify exactly what you mean by "more effective"? If you are referring to building credit scores, having multiple lines of credit is an idicator of greater creditworthiness. Lenders are more comfortable when they see you have been granted credit by other financial institutions.

You can have several credit cards, but do not have to be using them monthly.  Just use them occasionally or put a regularly recurring bill (cell phone, utilities,insurance) on one or more cards, then pay that card bill in full every month.  Keeps the card(s) active and supplies good reports for payments and utilization to help your credit score.
