Why after five or seven years are these collections still appearing on my account?

If they are on your account past the 7 year mark, file a dispute with each credit bureau ask that they be removed based on the date they were report.  if they are till on there after 5, good news, only 2 more years to go.

Worry about them after 7.5 years, which is the normal time for credit history to be reported.  I strongly suggest reading the articles on this site so you can learn how credit works, since this is something everyone needs to know. 

And teaching about credit is the purpose of Credit Karma. Take advantage of this opportunity.
