It is a legal issue as to how long they are to remain part of the Public Record section of a credit report.  A Chapter 13 usually remains for 7 years, and a Chapter 7 stays for 10.  If you apply for a mortgage, the lender may go back for 10 years and may find a Chapter 13 then (it is part of court records), which could cause difficulty in getting a mortgage.
