7 years, because that is the length of credit history  potential lenders/creditors look at.

It depends on the company that placed the account on your reports, in general though, negative items will remain for 7 years from the time that the account became delinquent (not from the time you pay the account off). You can send the company a goodwill request asking them to remove it from your credit reports. What you should have done was asked for a pay for delete agreement to get it removed after you paid it. Hindsight is 20/20 though, look for "goodwill letter" templates across the internet. Don't give up after your first attempt either.
