You really want to avoid bankruptcy since it hurts your credit far more than bad debts do.  And the most certain source of information on whether or not to file would be an attorney that specializes in bankruptcy, because they really don't want to have to do so just for the income.  If you got yourself overhead in debt, then bankruptcy could be considered a cop-out for irresponsible spending.  But if something serious such as major medical expenses or job loss severely reduced income/increased expenses and you can't make ends meet, bankruptcy might be an option.  Consult with an attorney that offers a free consultation on bankruptcy.
