And bankruptcy is a negative on your credit report for ten years after filing, which makes getting credit difficult.

It depends on your credit file and what you do with it. I've read some reports where it will bring it down to some of the lowest scores possible. Everything you file under Bk protection become delinquent and your Bk will not report payment to your credit file. Then you will not be able to finance anything for 5 years unless you get it approved through the courts. Do your research before filing......
