Bankruptcy will hurt your credit for a long time. Credit counseling will not hurt your credit at all. I have no idea of what your situation is though, if you are buried in debt that you can never repay then bankruptcy may be an option.

A competent bankruptcy attorney will provide advice on the initial consultation, and usually for free.  Listen to the advice and also check out Dave Ramsey's site for information on how to repay debts almost painlessly.  Make sure you have all the information possible before proceeding with something as serious as a bankruptcy.
